First US edition / printing of this classic juveline novel and first in Traver's series featuring the Banks children and their magical nanny. Adapted into the equally-classic 1964 movie starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. The American editon was issued in both a red and a blue jacket — no known priority, but the red is decidely scarcer. "And with that she took out from the empty bag a starched white apron and tied it round her waist. Next she unpacked a large cake of Sunlight Soap, a toothbrush, a packet of hairpins, a bottle of scent, a small folding armchair and a box of throat lozenges.”.
