INVITATION TO A BEHEADING

New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, (1959). First American edition. Hardcover. 8vo. Original quarter-cloth over boards. Very good in like jacket. Some moderate chipping to head and heal of jacket spine, with attendant rubbing to book tips. Some edgewear to DJ with several small closed tears. Unclipped. Overall, clean and sound. INSCRIBED by Dmitri Manbokov (Vladimir and Vera's son and the translator of this book) to Matthew Brucolli: "For talented, loyal, hard-working, / long-suffering Matt Bruccoli / with warm wishes / Dmitri Nabokov / Monteaux, 13 July 1986." Very good / very good. Item #13904

A significant association of the first of Nabokov's Russian-language novels to be translated into English. Inscribed by the book's translator, Nabokov's son Dmitri, to bibliographer Matthew Brucolli (1931-2008). Brucolli studied English with Nabokov at Cornell and would go on to publish several books under his own imprint based on Nabokov's Ithaca lectures. The bibliographer also covered Nabokov for the DICTIONARY OF LITERARY BIOGRAPHY. In addition, Brucolli and Dmitri would go on to edit an edition of Nabokov's SELECTED LETTERS (Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1989), a project they were likely in the midst of at the time of this inscription. A splendid triad of associations and a title rarely encountered inscribed, by either the author or the translator.
