Gritty naturalist sociological novel set in Newark's Third Ward by a neglected but important African American novelist. Lucas was one of the few black writers working in the noir/detective genres and he regularly published pulps throughout the fifties. However, this - his first novel - is clearly endebted to Wright's NATIVE SON and tells the story of a black girl raped by a group of white men after she witnesses a murder. Outraged residents eventually riot and loot the neighborhood. Scarce in the first edition.
