With a bold, cut Hoover signature tipped onto the first endpaper and accompanied by an August 19, 1970 TLS from Lewis L. Strauss to the book's previous owner, Jesse C. Johnson: "Dear Jesse: / Here is the autograph / of Herbert Hoover to tip in / your copy of his DE RE METALLICA. / Faithfully yours, / Lewis / Lewis L. Strauss." Strauss served as former private secretary to Hoover during his tenure as head of the United States Food Administration and was later named the first commissioner of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission where he worked with Johnson, who served as head of the agency's division on raw materials and mining.
