[Original Judo Teaching Materials]

np: [ca. 1950?]. Eight vintage B&W silver gelatin snapshot prints, each 2.25" square approx. Fine. With two oversize hand-drawn instructional diagrams, each 9" x 17" approx. One pictures footwork, the other on falling and balance (above). Very good with pinholes and large chip to one corner. Very good. Item #14351

Small collection of teaching materials from an early American martial arts studio. While Western exposure to Asian combat and self-defense techniques date to the 19th century, it wasn't until after WWII that it attained any real cultural traction, with studios beginning to be established predominately on the West Coast. These materials date from that time. Majority of photos (all un-captioned) demonstrate moves and positions. One portrait shows the class or dojo members, with final image an individual portrait which we presume is the instructor. Diagrams likely hung in the classroom or studio and are of a clearly professional quality. A small remnant of what was certainly at one time a larger assemblage, possibly even intended for eventual publication.

Price: $250.00
